Champlin's early history is connected to Dakota homelands, the Mississippi River, regional transportation, farming, and trade. Father Louis Hennepin was among the earliest Europeans associated with the area, and a trading post was later established near the river. The first permanent settlement was developed by Charles Miles in what was originally known as Marshall Township.
Champlin received its name from U.S. Navy Commodore Stephen Champlin, a naval officer associated with the War of 1812 and the development of the United States–Canada boundary. The settlement was divided from Dayton in 1859. Part of Champlin Township became the Village of Champlin in 1947, and the village and township were consolidated to form the present City of Champlin in 1971.
Champlin's position on the Mississippi River influenced its early transportation and commercial development. In 1855, residents operated a ferry connecting Champlin with Anoka and its railroad station. The historic Mill Pond is one of the remaining reminders of the city's early milling and river-based economy.
